This would be a B-17G, the chin turret with twin .50's being the telltale factor.

The "Memphis Belle"...if you zoom in close you can see Matthew Modine in the pilot's seat.

Not a bad guess, the aircraft in question shares a lot of characteristics of the "Buffalo".

A hint: due to poor quality canopy glazing, pilots tended to choose to leave the cockpit open or remove the rear portion of the canopy completely.

I know it is a Russian plane, P-6 I think was the designation, Polykarpov manufacturer. My library is in storage so all my reference books are unavailable at the moment.

I think we've got the right idea, just one number off. It's a Soviet I-16 (often referred to as a P(o)-16). It was past its prime by the beginning of WWII, but after the beginning of hostilities was put back into production to add numbers to the Red Air Force.
