Here is an interesting photo of two Canadian Sherman V's (one a Firefly and the other a 75mm or 105mm) in The Netherlands (Holland). It is quite telling about the fear that encompassed Allied Armor regiments while fighting the German Panzer Divisions. Allegedly the Canadians started it all the adding of extra armor and it spread to the other allied armies. The British armored regiments were made to remove it due to the taxing of the engines and transmissions by the extra weight. It continued on U.S. and Canadian tanks until the end of the war. The Americans even went to the length to rig up concrete to act as armor

"Maybe there are 5,000, maybe 10,000 Nazi bastards in their concrete foxholes before the Third Army. Now if Ike stops holding Monty's hand and gives me some supplies, I'll go through the Siegfried Line like %*$# through a goose."
