Fate of the Underground

Unread post by FieldMarshall Ober » Tue Feb 28, 2017 11:13 pm

I received a PM from pfclt about the pending forum closure. He was interested in kicking in a contribution towards paying the forum dues for another year. He suggested turning the forum over to the members as a sort of co-op ownership. Many say the pfclt is a borderline genius but frankly, I think he is an outright genius. Mabie that way we could avoid big fundraisers and everyone would have a say in things. You never know it could go in any direction. I would volunteer as the head admin and look after the forum platform and keep it running. The only catch is that the platform is 2 versions behind in updates from phpBB software which runs the forum. Its not a problem now but I forsee needing an upgrade in the next year or so. I hire a guy to do the updates and it costs around $50 usd for his labor since the software upgrade is free. Thoughts and comments?

:bowty: Sounds like a great idea. I will gladly kick in to help keep our little group going. Is there a way when the upgrade is done we could remove some of the excess forums that are not being posted in anymore?

It easy to collapse the forum down to something more compact without my tech. Whatever you guys want once you get organized is fine with me. Hosting and rental of our url was $100 last year, we raised enough to pay for the underground and pay about $50 towards the $100 hosting fee for the database. I am still willing to look after the database hosting alone.

So as of now we likely have a few members that would want to enter into the coop:
Ober
loco
Dano
pfclt
stalker (I think)
Curt (although I know his budget is tight)

You can count me in, tight budget & all...:D

The forumini might be bigger but that don't always mean better. The 2016 election thread got quite heated shall we say in replies & kind of split people into the proverbial "Us vs Them". Things remain civil & polite here, thus a friendlier environment. Who knows, we might grow here if we keep the forum up & running.

After time to think about this - and getting focused on the point here. I just want to say that Ober is the real genius. I made a suggestion that gave him the idea that he turned it into a viable, presentable post here........

Thanks for carrying on here Ober and of course I'm in for a donation whenever we need to do that...

I was going to say lets rename the forum, 'Axis and Allies genius underground' but that would be taking the joke too far. :Tout:

The rental is due in May sometime, we can organize more in late April when I receive the ebill.
