A Couple 50pt. Infantry Skirmishes/Training Builds

Unread post by curtm1911 » Wed Jan 16, 2013 9:39 pm

I will soon get the opportunity to introduce my daughter's BF to this game, he is an Experienced A&A boardgame player but new to the minis. I plan to make the learning curve as easy as possible, so I came up with some Infantry builds to teach the mechanics of Moving/LOS/Defensive Fire/etc.

A couple notes on my allowable play/builds/etc.

I like Infantry vs Infantry Battles a bit more than Armor Heavy Battles. Just me but I think it makes for more Strategy Based Thinking.

I will freely mix Nationalities, Axis with Axis & Allies with Allies, except in "Sanctioned" play at a Game Store or where ever.

I also like to get good use of the "Synegires" of combined SA's. An example is the EENCO & M1 Garands.

I noticed no UK build with the Lt. Corrected 17/3/2016 Happy St. Patricks day to all who celebrate it.

With that being said, here are the builds.

Allies:

USA:
Buffalo Soldiers x3 = 12 pts
M1 Garands x3 = 12 pts.
EENCO x1 = 7 pts.
BAR x1 = 4 pts.
M1919 MG x1 = 9 pts.
M2 Mortar or M8 75MM Pack Howitzer x1 = 6 pts.
Total 50 pts.

Red Devil Captain x1 = 7 pts.
Buffalo Soldiers x4 = 16 pts.
M1 Garands x3 = 12 pts.
M1919 MG x1 = 9 pts.
M2 Mortar or M8 Pack Howitzer x1 = 6 pts.
Total 50 pts.

UK:
Inspiring Lt. x1 = 10 pts.
SMLE x6 =18 pts.
Veteran SMLE x2 = 10 pts.
BREN Gunner x1 = 5 pts.
Vickers x1 = 8 pts.

Spotter x1 = 6 pts.
3" Mortar x1 = 11 pts.
Vickers x1 = 8 pts.
EENCO x1 = 7 pts.
SMLE x6 = 18 pts.
Total 50 pts.

USSR:
Veteran NCO x1 = 6 pts.
Guards Infantry x3 = 15 pts.
Mosin-Nagant x3 = 9 pts.
Degtyarev DP-27 x 1 = 4 pts.
Maxim MG x2 = 14 pts.
Soviet Conscript x1 = 2 pts
Total 50 pts.

Veteran NCO x1 = 6 pts.
Guards Infantry x3 = 15 pts.
Mosin-Nagant x5 = 15 pts.
Maxim MG x2 = 14 pts.
Total 50 pts.

Guards Infantry x4 = 20 pts.
Maxim MG x2 = 14 pts.
Veteran NCO x1 = 6 pts.
Soviet/Polish Infantry x3 = 9 pts.
Total 49 pts.

Axis:

German:
Wehrmacht Veteran Infantry x5 = 25 pts.
MG 42 x1 = 10 pts.
SS Hauptsturmfurher x1 = 7 pts.
DAK Infantry x2 = 8 pts.
Total 50 pts.

SS Haupsturmfurher x1 = 7 pts.
MG 42 x1 = 10 pts.
DAK x2 = 8 pts.
Wehrmacht Veteran Infantry x3 = 15 pts.

Fucile Modello x7 = 21 pts.
Breda Modello 37 MG x1 = 8 pts.

Stalwart Hero x1 = 7 pts.
Blackshirts x4 = 16 pts.
Fucile modello x7 = 21 pts.
Breda Modello 37 MG x1 = 8 pts.
Total 52 pts.
With this build, you have 0 Initiative but get a 5/5 with "Covering Fire", ignores Disruption & 4 "Ruthless" shots for Enemy Disrupted units.

They also are a fun, quick game for a change from the Armor Slugfests we all seem to Really like to assemble. Vehicles/Armor can be added to these as well & go up to 100 pts. or so for another quick game & an Easy Learning Game. Hope you folks enjoy them.

Edited to include Japan & Italy. Also some other Allied builds with the "Covering Fire" SA to deal with the Wehrmacht Veteran Infantry MG 42 & their "Suppressive Fire".

:bowty: Nice idea Curtm1911. Sometimes it's just as much fun to have 1 map and a small build. These types of games are great for a limited time frame.

They look good Curt. They are all soldiers I use in similar platoon formats. Good modules that should preform well on the battlefield.

Make sure you get at least on tank out when you teach your future opponent to play. You need something shiny to catch his eye and he's hooked. :D

I'we been trying to get the good word out among my friends as well!
I'we found that the army building process seems to be a bit to much for many at first, so by making some "fixed" training builds, they are less likely to the be overwhelmed.

I tryied to incorporate as many aspects as possible to give an idea of the games many functions.
We normally play with single-army bonuses, hence the different points.
And this is what I'we been using to teach people the game:
USA 100:
"Red Devil"
P-51D
M7 Priest
M4A1 Sherman
"Screaming Eagle"
Ranger x2
Marines M2-2 Flamethrower

USSR 105:
Cossack Captain
Il-10 Sturmovik
SU-85
T-34/85
ZIS-2 52mm
Maxim M1910 MG
Degtyarev DP-27
Sovjet-polisk infanteri

UK 105:
Eagle-Eyed NCO
Hawker Typhoon
Churchill Chrocodile
Humber Scout Car
17-Pounder antitankminer gun
Defiant Paratroopers
Vickers MG
Veteran SMLE Riflemen

Germany 100:
Wehrmacht Oberleutnant
Messerschmidt MÉ-110
Jagdpanther
SD KFZ 234/2 "Puma"
Panzerschreck
Wehrmacht Veteran infanteri
Mauser Kar 98k

Italien 110:
Stalwart lieutenant
Macchi C.202 Folgore
Semovente 90/53
Semovente 75/18 x2
Autoblinda AB41
Breda Modello 37
Stalwart Hero
Italien Alpine Troop
Blackshirts
Futile Modello 1891
Italien Conscript

I feel that these builds give a good all-round look into the game and might be usable fore AAM class 102 ;-)

Good to see another player who is trying to make the learning process easier for new players. As I said in my earlier post, I like more Inf vs Inf battles but also like the Armor in the game. I have found that using just Inf tends to let the new person grasp the ideas of Movement/LOS/Defensive Fire a little quicker. Once that is accomplished, they usually say "Can we add Vehicles/Tanks now" & the hook is set.......I find the one step at a time from Infantry to Inf/Vehicles then Inf/Vehicles/Planes to work well for newbs to get used to the mechanics of the game & how to do a solid build. Your builds are great but, no offense intended here, seem to have too much going on in them to keep track of when dealing with a New Player. It seems that they could be a bit overwhelming maybe. Having said that, I will write these down & use them as Training Builds also. They are solid & do get all the unit types into play. The object is to get the new player Hooked but not overwhelm them right away. I have found that once they get to playing, the "Addiction" comes on naturally......:D

Aggreed!
I use these on folks, that have played similar games, so that they see more aspects at once.
But I think you might be onto something with the INF vs. INF for starters - I'll try it out.

BTW, I love your Japanese builds! Banzaiing arisakas ALL the way!

Thanks for the compliment on the Japanese builds. I supplimented my Japanese Army with some of my Christmas $$$, it was kinda thin but now is much healthier.....lol

As for your builds, I can see where more experienced players would grasp things quicker with them. I will put them in my collection of builds & use them for secondary training builds once past the Inf vs Inf ones. They incorporate the Vehicles & Aircraft nicely as well as some of the other Elite Infantry units.

It is nice to see that there are players who are trying to get others into this game & going about it in a way that makes things easy to follow without too much confusion or aspects to figure out.

....this is a bit off-topic but last week at the LGS the theme was Ultimate 100pt army. 100 points and the units can come from any nation, axis or allied. It was fun to play the mixed armies. This is the one I played:

Veteran Sherman x1
Sherman 105 x1
SS-Panzergrenader x2
Inspiring Hero x1
Vet Wehr Inf x1
Bazooka x1
Recon BMW x1
MG42 team
Polish Cav x1

Super build and I like the idea of an all nation army build, but doesn't your build add up to 102 pts?
I think I'd swap the Vet Sherman for a Jagdpanzer IV/70 (V), to give a few more AV dice.
And I'd swap the Bazooka for a Panzerfaust 30, sacrifice some range for extra AV dice.

I haven't tried the Recon BMW yet, but I see it's potential, but think the 6 pts may be put to better use elsewhere.

I used the 2 shermans because they are more multi purpose than TD's. The 105 is a soldier killer with so-so AV attacks and Bombardment. The Vet sherman has a bit of both plus the ability to ignore disruptions. I knew I wouldn't be fighting a Tiger so big guns weren't necessary so I get flexibility instead. The cavalry and BMW were built to quickly take out any ammo dumps, spotters and ATG's which they did very well by eliminating two Pak 40's and a spotter by the end of turn 2. I used the bazooka specifically because of its range to keep lighter armored vehicles at a distance.

This was my alternate build mostly USA:

Sherman Callope x1
Chaffee X1
Ranger x2
German Howitzer x1
M1 Rifle x1
M1919 MG team x1
Jeep x1 + Recoilless rifle x1
BMW R75 x1
