House Platoon build guide

Unread post by Locozugmeister » Wed Feb 15, 2012 5:42 pm

:bowty: I think KennyJman may have posted this elsewhere but, I'll post it6 here.

This is a guide our group came up with for making Platoons for our games. It frees up a few points for other pieces and allows for units to be included that you might not use most of the time.

House Platoon Builds

House Platoon build rules:
Both Players must agree upon House Platoon builds that include “custom cards” and “proxy” pieces before game start.
Platoons must have the number of units as shown (unless otherwise stated) to qualify for platoon point reduction. If not, point value on card must be used.

Soldier Platoons:

-1 point per unit under 20 points.

Soldiers without "Artillery" subtitle = Must be 5 units max. May have 6 units if Officer is added.
Soldiers with "Artillery" subtitle = Must be 4 units max. 2 units must be Artillery and 2 must be non-Artillery. May have 3 non-artillery units if Officer is added.

Vehicle Platoons:

For every unit subtract 1 point per 10 points

01 - 10 points = - 1 point
11 - 20 points = - 2 points
21 - 30 points = - 3 points
31 - 40 points = - 4 points
41 - 50 points = - 5 points
51 - 60 points = - 6 points
61 - 70 points = - 7 points
71 - 80 points = - 8 points

Vehicles without attack values
(Jeeps, Trucks & Transports, etc....) = 3 units min./4 unit max (maybe mixed)

Vehicles with attack values
(Halftracks, scout cars & Armored cars etc…) = 3 units min./4 units max (maybe mixed)

Vehicles / Tanks, Tank Destroyers &, Assault Guns
Light Platoon = 4 units max
Medium Platoon = 3 units max (may mix 1 medium & 3 light)
Heavy Platoon = 2 units max (may mix 1 heavy & 2 medium)

Vehicles / Self-propelled Artillery
Medium Battery = 3 units max
Heavy Battery = 2 units max
Mixed Battery = 1 heavy unit & 2 Medium units max

Pillboxes, Bunkers and, Strongpoint:

Pillbox (custom piece made from pop cap) = 5 points if using "House rules".
Bunker = 10 points if using "House rules".
Strongpoint hexes = 10 points

Ive got to sit down and have a good look at this, it looks interesting. I like the platoons that you guys made up made up a few years ago and I'm thinking you based this on the platoons you created. Thanks for posting.

Yes, Ober. It is loosely based on those, but we made it a LOT more flexible to accomodate those in the group that didn't have all the pieces to make the static platoons. This newer way allows you to create your own platoons based on what pieces you have in your arsenal.

If I have understood correctly this house rule platoon point discount. so is there a massive discount on the heavy tanks platoons. compared to the WOTC fixed Platoons, why ?
The medium platoons are not that big differents

WOTC vs house rule examples.
Medium:
U.S.. Vet Sherman platoon
1x Rhino 26 points
1x 105 24 points
1x M4A1 21 points
As singles 71 points
platoon 64 points
discounted 7 points

German Panzer IV Platoon.
1x SS Panzer 27 points
2x Panzer G 46 points
As singles. 73 points
platoon 65 points
discounted 8 points
Discount House rule on both medium tank platoons 9 points

Heavy:
Vet Tiger platoon
1x Vet 65 points
2x Tiger1. 112 points
As singles - 177 points
Platoon 159 points
Discount 8 points
Discount House rule 14 points ( with max 2 heavy Vet tigers)

Maybe i mix the cost points with V.1 And V.2 here.

how do you guys come up with this mathematically formula to make it balanced between the platoons, heavy, medium and light, with WOTC there are only about 1-3 points between them on the few comparisons I've done

here I have fallen out of the house rule, and wotc system, and dont call me stupid. Hahahaha
With the house rule its easier to make platoons yes, but then again is it more balanced compare to the fixed wotc platoons

Go easy on me here :? . I am a newbe with an massive collection

Edit becouse some mistages

:bowty: We didn't use any mathamatical formula for this, we just thought it would work to save some points for the build. Our group usually plays 200 to 300 point games and it allowed for a frw extra pieces.

As for the tanks and such. If a vehicle was historicaly a light tank you can platoon up to 4 together. Medium can platoon up to 3 and, heavy up to 2. We put a mix catagory for some of the members who don't have enough of one vehicle type to be able to still use the platoons.

Alright I like this mathematical formula you have here, I'll definitely try to work with it, although I'm thinking of doubling the points discounted, because in smaller games, 1 or 2 points isn't a lot, now in large games I think its more useful. My gaes hover around 100-150 in size and only getting a discount of 1 or 2 points per 10 doesn't seem like a lot of bang for your buck.

:bowty: Most of our games are 200 - 400 pts. so it works well for us. I'll gladly try yours when you have it worked up.
