Welcome to the AAM Cartography Thread, hopefully this should fill any voids for online/printable maps, and be a future storage for more maps.
Before I start, I want to tell ya'll that with anything (map's and the like) I post, you can PM me and most of the time I can send you a higher quality. The Forum guidelines prevent big files form being posted, so these are smaller than their real versions, but I can always send them via eMail. Secondly, if you see any mistakes please tell me and I'll try to fix them.
Thirdly, if you have any request for maps, please PM me and I'll see what I can do about it, I might even have the time to make a few custom maps. Lastly, if you have some maps of your own you want posted, either reserve a post in this thread for them, or I'll give you my address and you can email them to me to add to the posts. Thanks! If you're having trouble loading the maps, or have slow internet. Try clicking the "quote" button to the top-right of my posts, then copy the link for the maps you want and paste them one at a time into your browser, or else you can visit the links I provide.Overview
For those who don't know, the word Cartography comes from French and Latin for "map-writing". Of course, most of these maps were not "written" but made using various image manipulation programs. Custom Cartography refers to the making of a map that is not just the original WotC map.Types
There are three main types of Custom AAM Cartography:
Original Terrain Photo-Realistc Maps
This type includes maps that are made directly from or drawn from a real map or satellite picture. This type is very hard to make well, as often you are required remove modern structures. Although these maps look really nice and are fun to play on, it is often hard to tell what terrain is, and if the terrain was there at the time of the battle you are recreating.
The most notable maps of this type are Baron's maps.Custom Terrain Maps
This type uses an image manipulation program to make a map with transformable terrain. By using this, your maps never look copied or alike. You can also use 3D effects to give your maps realistic shadows and shading. To make a map like this you would need a program that can duplicate the visible effect of a mountain or forest. In many ways, these maps are easier to make than the Photo-Realistic Maps, because they can be made with regard to hexes and still look life like. They are harder to create than an Original Terrain map because all your terrain you must get from a source different than the original WotC maps. Notable map makers who use this type of terrain are Carrion and 88. (Although other users have also made maps of this type)Original Terrain Maps
Making a map of this type is very easy, all that is needed is a clone-stamp/copying tool and the original WotC maps. These maps are nice because almost anyone can make them, and they can be made quickly and easily. The downside to the maps is that they often appear "hex-y", and some times make it easy to tell where they were copied from. This type of cartography also includes maps made of single hexes placed on a blank map in a way that they make a map. An older cartographer may purposely "misplace" some terrain to make the map look less hex-based, but still hold the general shape.
As the name implies, most of these maps are made from the original 2 inch WotC maps released before the V2 minis came. Rarely are they made with the newer 3 inch maps because they are poor quality often. Many cartographers use this technique, including Sindor, Ober, and myself. (You can also make custom terrain out of the Original maps and put them on your maps)Size
The Official WotC maps have been released in two sizes: 2 inch and 3 inch. The original maps from the Starter are the 2" size, (meaning each hex is 2" from side to side, not corner to corner) making them about 10.5x16 inches total. After the unit size change, WotC started making 3" maps, which are about 15.7x24 inches. Most of the WotC maps and my maps can be printed at full size and be 2", or printed at 150% (obviously) to get 3" hexes. Sadly Photobucket tweaks most of them to make them smaller, so if you want the full-size maps for printing 2" maps, then you will have to PM me your address or look for them here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/aam/maps
As for the other maps you might have to tweak 'em a bit to get them right!
